Almost everybody acquires habits in their lives. Sometimes they are beneficial because they give us a sense of comfort and security and that we know what is going on around us. We use our routines and habits to negotiate our place in the world.

However there are some habits which can be quite destructive, especially with regards to how we present and feel about ourselves.

Here is a list of some of the main habits:

  • Stuttering
  • Nail biting
  • Hair pulling
  • Nervous tics
  • Nose picking

As you can imagine, these issues would be likely to affect a person’s self-esteem and confidence or may even be a direct result of a lack of it!

Other examples of habits include smoking, drinking alcohol, eating chocolate, binge eating, apologising, swearing and many others.

Habits become so well formed and maintained because they have been so well practiced. They can also play a role in our weight management issues just because of how we make powerful associations!
